Soon Bob’s duties became routine. He learned that crew were never permitted to leave the ship due to security reasons. Few of the crew approached Bob, because no one wished to be associated with him due to the suspicion that would ultimately follow should there be a death of either the tester or whom he was protecting. The taste tester historically lived a rather solitary life. The only one on the ship he could talk to was Chief Brumker.

About two weeks into the voyage he walked into the galley to begin preparations for lunch. The chief was seated in his usual spot at the crew’s table. He sat down across the table and asked, “Just what happened to the last guy who had my job?”

The chief looked up thoughtfully, “He slipped up. He wasn’t focusing on his job.”

“I understand that, but what were the events that led to what happened?”

“It was dinner, the tester brought in the meal, tasted it and died,” was the simple reply.

“Alright, but who was there? Was there anything out of the ordinary?”

“Captain Rogg was at the table alone, all was normal.” The Larn weren’t known as conversationalists.

“Of the crew, was anyone there who would not have ordinarily been eating at that time?”

“No. No one was there other than the captain and the taste tester.”

“Was anyone missing?”

The chief thought for a moment. He raised an eyebrow, then asked, “Why?”

“I would just like to know what I’m up against.”

“The first officer had been called away due to a malfunction in the Star Drive system. He would normally have eaten with the Captain.”
